11/28/2023 0 Comments Teardown real estate lingo![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Close examination of music’s representation in such marketing discourse underlines how it too has been transformed by the logic of user monitoring and commodification. Notable in this respect is how music figures into marketing campaigns directed not at consumers, but at prospective advertisers and investors. While previous research has indicated how various features, functionalities, and interfaces serve to distinguish competing services, less attention has been paid to the way they position themselves vis-à-vis other new media companies also trading in user data and user-commodities. A key issue this article pursues concerns the changing status of music within the commercial strategies of online streaming. Streaming sites have thus transformed into enterprises whose business is not limited to the sale of music-related services, but relies increasingly upon the collection, aggregation, and exchange of user data. This has impelled Pandora, Spotify and others to develop alternative means of extracting value from users. Yet online streaming’s promise of remonetizing musical commodities previously demonetized by practices of file sharing has been called into doubt by difficulties in converting users of advertising-based “freemium” services into paying subscribers. Key catalysts in the transition from ownership- to access-based models of music distribution, services like Pandora, Spotify, Deezer, and others have positioned themselves as a means whereby listeners may be reintegrated into a “digital enclosure,” a space over which rights holders can exercise greater control. This article explores questions of music use, commodification, and online surveillance in cloud-based music streaming services. This article concludes with an examination of how commercial imperatives shape 'ways of seeing' and 'algorithmic individuation' on music streaming platforms. In particular, ways of seeing are heavily influenced by the consumer categories that are defined and demanded by advertisers. Then, drawing from Gilbert Simondon's theory of individuation, it demonstrates how ways of seeing the individual work to enact the individual on these platforms. It first conducts a comparison of how two leading streaming platforms conceive of the individual music listener. This article explores this idea by taking a closer look at online music streaming services. Nevertheless, if Williams were to study contemporary online platforms, he would no doubt conclude that there are in fact no individuals, but only ways of seeing people as individuals. In an age of personalized media, the word 'masses' seems like an anachronism. Raymond Williams once wrote, '… there are in fact no masses, but only ways of seeing people as masses'. Thus, the book itself became an intervention into the ethics and legal frameworks of corporate behavior. The authors' innovative digital methods earned them a stern letter from Spotify accusing them of violating its terms of use the company later threatened their research funding. Spotify Teardown combines interviews, participant observations, and other analyses of Spotify's “front end” with experimental, covert investigations of its “back end.” The authors engaged in a series of interventions, which include establishing a record label for research purposes, intercepting network traffic with packet sniffers, and web-scraping corporate materials. Spotify was originally praised as an innovative digital platform but increasingly resembles a media company in need of regulation, raising questions about the ways in which such cultural content as songs, books, and films are now typically made available online. Spotify has been hailed as the solution to illicit downloading, but it began as a partly illicit enterprise that grew out of the Swedish file-sharing community. Borrowing the notion of “teardown” from reverse-engineering processes, in this book a team of five researchers have playfully disassembled Spotify's product and the way it is commonly understood. Spotify Teardown contests the tired claim that digital culture thrives on disruption. ![]() Yet such disruption always comes at a price. Sealed cladding systems can be used with CMU construction, as well as OSB and glass-faced gypsum backing. Using the following system fully protects the stucco from water penetration and eliminates the need for a drainage plane because water cannot infiltrate the surface. In order to get optimum results, you need to finish the stucco with a sealant that resists water penetration, but still allows any moisture that gets behind the wall to exit in the form of vapor. Sealed cladding systems have been successfully used for the last 40 years to waterproof stucco and have provided a complication-free service life. Waterproofing a stucco finish requires a multi-step process that provides high resistance to water intrusion while still allowing water vapor to easily escape. However, this isn’t totally true - stucco is indeed permeable and will let some water through. Since stucco is a masonry product, it is often believed to be waterproof already. When properly maintained, stucco has been known to last for more than 50 years. It can be mixed with paint to produce a solid color or it can be painted after it is installed. The proper mixture of Portland cement, lime, sand and water provides a durable, long-lasting exterior finish for your home. So, how can this costly problem be solved? Let’s start with the basics. However, far too often, failures appear in the form of rotten wood on the exterior walls - an issue that could have been prevented if the stucco had been installed correctly. Usually found in the Deep South and other areas of high humidity, stucco must do two things: keep out water and allow the wall to breathe, releasing any water vapor that has been trapped in the exterior wall system. However, stucco is more than just aesthetically pleasing - it’s known to be hardwearing and stable. Stucco creates a beautiful finish that brings a Mediterranean look to any home. ![]() 11/28/2023 0 Comments Cafe dolce gusto lungo![]() ![]() DeLonghi manufactures the Lattissima models in Italy exclusively. Nespresso system Machines Nespresso machine containing professional-grade Nespresso pods, incompatible with the regular capsules In 2022, Nespresso became a certified B Corporation. In 2008 Gaillard launched a company that sold biodegradable capsules for Nespresso machines, competing with Nespresso. He claimed that the original idea for Nespresso was bought by Nestlé in 1973, and did not come from Favre, though Nespresso denies this. Gaillard left Nestlé in 1997 after falling out with CEO Peter Brabeck-Letmathe. Favre resigned in 1990 after personality clashes, and the two men were critical of each other. In later years there was friction between Favre-who came up with the concept and developed the first machines-and Gaillard, who made the machine a commercial success. Today, Nespresso has a global network of more than 700 boutiques in 68 countries. Starting out as an e-commerce business, Nespresso only opened their first boutique in Paris in 2000 as a concept store. Thereafter, other contracts were signed with Krups, Magimix, Alessi, Philips, Siemens and De'Longhi. In 1990, Nestlé signed a contract with Turmix, which started to sell Nespresso machines in Switzerland. A decade later, in part due to the efforts of Jean-Paul Gaillard, who introduced the Le Club community-providing Nestlé with a large database of customers and their preferences -reduced prices of machines but increased capsule prices, changed the machine from an office machine into a luxury brand now available to consumers, and licensed production by other companies, the product became more successful. Nespresso first tested its new concept in Japan in 1986, and rolled it out to consumers in Switzerland, France, Italy and Japan the same year. It was introduced to the Swiss market, looking like large traditional commercial espresso machines, initially without significant success. Early prototypes were complicated machines with large tanks and pumps and tubes the machine was not ready for the market for a decade. The system was patented by Nestlé in 1976. As well as the raised squares which controls capsule rupture points, the holes between the squares through which the espresso exits the holder are also visible. The base of a first-generation Nespresso machine capsule holder. In operation, a sharp-pointed spout would pierce the capsule and inject pressurised hot water, forcing the foil against a spiked plate which burst it inwards, letting the espresso flow out of the spout. In use it ensured greater aeration, like the repeated pumping Favre had noticed. The pod containing the coffee was sealed, keeping it fresh. This increases the flavor in the coffee and creates the foam you see on top which is called crema. Oxidization occurs as the pumping action pushes water and air into the ground coffee. He found that the only difference between that bar and the many others using the same machines was that operators pumped the piston many times before releasing the coffee, while others did so only once. In 1975 Eric Favre, an employee of Nestlé, noticed that a coffee bar near the Pantheon in Rome, Italy had a disproportionately large number of customers. The word Nespresso is a portmanteau of "Nestlé" and "Espresso", a common mechanic used across other Nestlé brands ( Nescafé, BabyNes, Nesquik).Īll Nespresso coffee is roasted, ground and encapsulated in one of three factories in Switzerland (Avenches, Orbe and Romont), but the company sells its system of machines and capsules worldwide, as well as the VertuoLine system in North America and certain other countries. By 2011 Nespresso had annual sales in excess of 3 billion Swiss francs. Once inserted into a machine, the capsules are pierced and processed, water is then forced against a heating element at high pressure meaning that only the quantity for a single cup is warmed. Nespresso machines brew espresso and coffee from coffee capsules (or pods in machines for home or professional use ), a type of pre-apportioned single-use container, or reusable capsules (pods), of ground coffee beans, sometimes with added flavorings.
